  • Sampras lasts just a set in California exho

    7/13/12 1:14 AM | Johan Lindahl
Sampras lasts just a set in California exho While ATP men grind away on the clay in Europe before switching to grass for the London Olympics, women have begun this week in California on hard courts.

Even through Wimbledon winner Serena Williams is on hand in Stanford, the tournament is lacking on backup star power.

So that's where Pete Sampras was supposed to come in.

The seven-time Wimbledon winner, whose record at the All-England club was duplicated by Roger Federer's triumph last weekend, was to have filled in nicely and given fans a thrill as he played an exho with Michael Chang in a battle of Grand Slam winners from the past.

But the 41-year-old Sampras lasted little more than a set against his fellow Californian, citing a left calf injury as he quit in the second set. "I'm disappointed that I won't be able to play any more but unfortunately my calf injury won't allow it," said Sampras.

"I was looking forward to taking on Jim (Courier), but I know that he and Michael (Chang) will put on a great match."

The high-profile male exhos were intended to provide value for money and placate spectators who found their annual event being staged a fortnight earlier than usual due to the summer tennis schedule skewed by the Olympics.

Courier and Chang will now play a mixed doubles exho match, though participants and format have yet to be determined as officials scratch together some entertainment.
