  • Kohlschreiber, Haas clash in all-German semifinal

    6/16/12 6:57 AM | Ricky Dimon
Kohlschreiber, Haas clash in all-German semifinal The German fans in Halle won't mind that Rafael Nadal vs. Tomas Berdych did not come to fruition. Instead, Saturday's top-half semifinal features countrymen Philipp Kohlschreiber and Tommy Haas.

Philipp Kohlschreiber and Tommy Haas will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers and for the third time at this same event when they collide in the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open on Saturday afternoon.

If the previous encounters between the two Germans are any indication, this one will not disappoint. Both went to third-set tiebreakers, with Kohlschreiber prevailing 7-5, 5-7, 7-6(5) in the 2008 second round before Haas got revenge with a 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) semifinal victory in 2009.

Kohlschreiber, the defending champion, is in the midst of one the best years of his career. The world No. 34 won a title in Munich during the clay-court swing and he is not slowing down on grass. Kohlschreiber ousted Dustin Brown and Lukasz Kubot then upset Rafael Nadal in straight sets on Friday to extend his season record to 25-12.

Six years older than his compatriot at 34, Haas is enjoying a rare clean bill of health and he is making the most of it. The wild card beat Bernard Tomic and Marcel Granollers before taking out No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych 7-5 in the third during quarterfinal action. Haas is a stellar 12-6 at the ATP level in 2012.

Both players are in outstanding form, both will enjoy crowd support, and both have always been comfortable at this tournament. All the ingredients are there for another three-set thriller. It could obviously go either way, but Kohlschreiber in three entertaining sets is the pick.
