Tour veterans Radek Stepanek and Mikhail Youzhny will fight in the Halle quarterfinals on Friday, each looking to move into Saturday’s semifinal.
The last time Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic met Mikhail Youzhny, they engaged in a lengthy 5-set battle on the lawns of the All-England Club. Unfortunately for fans at the Gerry Weber Open, that match was way back in 2008 and isn’t necessarily a good predictor of another long hard-fought match.
Stepanek is just slightly higher ranked at No. 26 in the world (Youzhny is No. 31), but he had a rocky lead-up to Roland Garros which ended in a rough first-round defeat at hands of Belgian youngster David Goffin. The Czech man went on to play a Challenger event on clay right after Paris and lost in the semifinals there.
Youzhny had a good win over Alexandr Dolgopolov already this week and should come into this match with good confidence.
Prediction – Youzhny in 3.
