Haas advances, Lacko books meeting with Nadal Tommy Haas gets a first-set retirement from Bernard Tomic on Tuesday in Halle. Haas is joined in the second round by Lukas Lacko, who will go up against French Open champion Rafael Nadal.

Tommy Haas advanced to the second round of the Gerry Weber Open on Tuesday afternoon when Bernard Tomic retired while trailing 5-2 in the opening set. Tomic had reportedly been feeling ill many days in advance and did not recover in time for the start of the grass-court swing.

Haas, a wild-card entrant into Halle, was cruising right along before it ended. The 34-year-old German dropped only three points in four service games and took control with an early break. Tomic called it quits when Haas held easily in the seventh game.

Lukas Lacko also booked a spot in round two as he overcame Konstantin Kravchuk 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in two hours and 28 minutes. Lacko fired five aces without double-faulting and he broke serve five times.

Next up for the Slovak is seven-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal. The second-ranked Spaniard will have had two full days off when he takes the court on Thursday.
