• Berdych credits Miami loss for clay wins

Berdych credits Miami loss for clay wins World No.7 Tomas Berdych is convinced that his third-round loss on Miami hard courts in March gave him the time he needed to prepare properly for the clay season.

The Czech, who is leading his team through the World Team Cup in Germany, crushed Andy Roddick in round-robin, leaving the former world No.1 just three games.

While Roddick and the Americans suffer in the waning days until the weekend French Open start - James Blake won three games in his Dusseldorf defeat to Radek Stepanek - 2010 Roland Garros semifinalist Berdych continues to thrive.

The Madrid finalist against Roger Federer said that his tune-up for the surface has been flawless. "I had very good preparation for this clay season. I want to help the team try and win. The goal is to be ready to play matches here and to win them. It's not yet time to think of the French Open."

After returning from two months off with a hip injury, world No. 29 Roddick has already cracked a racquet after two losses in as many matches, winning just seven games.
