The Czech Republic is 1-0 at the World Team Cup after edging Japan 2-1 on Tuesday. Despite losing the first singles match a day earlier, the Czechs got wins from Tomas Berdych and the doubles duo of Radek Stepanek and Frantisek Cermak.

Berdych turned in a dreadful second set against Go Soeda during which he served at 42 percent, but the world No. 7 still managed to prevail 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. He saved a whopping 13 of 14 break points, including a combined 12 of 12 in sets one and three.

Stepanek and Cermak broke the 1-1 tie by defeating Soeda and Tatsuma Ito 6-2, 7-6(4).

Germany, the host nation and defending champion, also found the win column via a strong singles performance from Florian Mayer. The world No. 35 followed up Philipp Kohlschreiber's Sunday blowout of Alex Bogomolov by defeating Igor Andreev 6-2, 7-6(7). Germany ended up sweeping Russia as it also took the doubles point.
