  • Countries vie for World Team Cup in Dusseldorf

    5/20/12 6:06 AM | Ricky Dimon
Countries vie for World Team Cup in Dusseldorf Eight nations will be in action throughout this upcoming week in Dusseldorf during the buildup to the French Open. A rare clay-court appearance by Andy Roddick of the United States will be featured at the tournament.

The upcoming week is all about final preparation for the French Open, but it's not all about individuals. While an ATP event takes place in Nice, team glory will be on the line in Dusseldorf with the annual World Team Cup.

Eight nations are on hand; four in two separate groups. The Red Group features the Czech Republic, the United States, Argentina, and Japan. Making up the Blue Group are Germany, Russia, Croatia, and Serbia.

Team USA has done extremely well to book a spot in the Davis Cup semifinals already this year, but the Dusseldorf squad will look much different without John Isner and the Bryan Brothers. An ailing Mardy Fish has pulled out, leaving it up to Andy Roddick, Ryan Harrison, and James Blake. Roddick has not played since the Sony Ericsson Open, where he stunned Roger Federer in the third round before going down to Juan Monaco.

Germany treated the home crowd to a title last season and it has all hands on deck for its trophy defense. Philipp Kohlschreiber, Philipp Petzschner, and Florian Mayer anchor the squad and doubles specialist Christopher Kas is also ready to suit up.

Other notable participants include Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic and Viktor Troicki, Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, Russian Dmitry Tursunov, and the Czech duo of Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek. Berdych is coming off a runner-up finish in Madrid and a quarterfinal showing in Rome.
