• Frenchmen Gasquet, Simon into Rome third round

    5/16/12 9:43 PM | Cheryl Murray
Frenchmen Gasquet, Simon into Rome third round No. 11 seed Gilles Simon had some difficulty with Guillermo Garcia-Lopez but managed to get through his second-round match.

    Gilles Simon (11) def. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (Q) 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

Spanish qualifier Guillermo Garcia-Lopez had plenty of opportunities to pull off the upset in this match. After losing the first set, Garcia-Lopez came back with a vengeance in the second set. He secured a pair of service breaks while surrendering none of his own to level the match at a set apiece.

The Spaniard carried the momentum into the third set. He went up a double-break and had a 4-0 lead over Simon. The Frenchman fought his way back level with four consecutive games, when Garcia-Lopez looked poised to stop the blood-letting. He had 40-0 to hold for the first time in four games, but he was still unable to make it happen.

Simon broke for a third time in the set to finally take the lead, then he served out the match for 6-4.

Richard Gasquet (16) def. Paolo Lorenzi 6-3, 6-2

Simon’s countryman Richard Gasquet had a far less dramatic match. The Frenchman took on Italian Paolo Lorenzi and secured a straight-set victory without dropping serve or even facing a single break point.

The win sends Gasquet into a tricky third round showdown against world No. 4 Andy Murray, against whom he has had a number of highly dramatic matches.
