  • Federer looks to continue momentum at Rome Masters

    5/13/12 11:03 PM | Ricky Dimon
Federer looks to continue momentum at Rome Masters Roger Federer is headed to Rome after taking the Madrid title over Tomas Berdych on Sunday. Federer is in a section of the draw that also includes Janko Tipsarevic, John Isner, and Gael Monfils.

The second quarter of this week's Internazionali BNL d'Italia draw features a handful of red-hot players, none to a greater extent than Roger Federer. Following Sunday's title in Madrid, Federer is back up to No. 2 in the world and in prime contention for the second seed at the French Open.

Federer's nearest Top 8 seed in Rome is Janko Tipsarevic, who owns the other first-round bye in the section. Tipsarevic is coming off a semifinal performance in Madrid, which included an upset of fellow Serb Novak Djokovic prior to a loss to Federer. His opener will come against either Stanislas Wawrinka or Robin Haase.

Tipsarevic is on a collision course for the third round with John Isner, who has been lethal on clay this year while also finishing runner-up to Federer at the Indian Wells Masters. Isner begins his campaign against Munich champion Philipp Kohlschreiber and the winner will face Belgrade champ Andreas Seppi in round two.

Seppi ousted Denis Istomin in three sets on Sunday and he is joined in the second round by Juan Carlos Ferrero. Ferrero earned his first tournament victory of the season by dismissing Kevin Anderson.

Up next for Ferrero is either Gael Monfils or Alex Bogomolov. Monfils is a stellar 13-5 for his 2012 campaign after being stymied by eventual runner-up Tomas Berdych in the Madrid third round.

If he wants the number one he MUST play in Rome. Because he is kind of set to lose some big points at RG being the defending finalist.
He has a really easy draw in Rome until semis, so he could just go there, reach the semis and lose to Djokovic. He would be winning some points doing that. Let's see what he decides.

I think there is some injury with Fed. He took a pill at the end of the first set. He mentioned after his vacation that he had been having foot problems. He would not skip Rome due to fatigue. It would have to be an injury.

Roger will not play for sure if he is injured. Health should always come first, for sure, for sure.
