  • Nadal returns to red clay in Rome

    5/12/12 8:48 PM | Kelli DeMario
Nadal returns to red clay in Rome World No. 2 Rafael Nadal is set to continue the European clay-court season as the ATP World Tour heads to Rome for the third week of May. The Spaniard enters into the Masters 1000 event as the second seed.

Rafael Nadal makes his return to competition after losing a third-round match to compatriot Fernando Verdasco at the Masters 1000 Madrid. The 25-year-old is 28-4 for the season, aided by recent title-winning efforts in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona.

Nadal is a five-time champion in Rome, having won consecutive titles from 2005-2007 and 2009-2010. He advanced to last year’s final, where he finished runner-up to world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. 4-6, 4-6.

The world No. 2 headlines a competitive quarter of the draw that includes (7) Tomas Berdych, (12) Nicolas Almagro and (15) Feliciano Lopez.

Other players in the same section are Fabio Fognini, Lukasz Kubot, Potito Starace, Jarkko Nieminen, Marin Cilic, Marcel Granollers and Marcos Baghdatis.

After a first-round bye, Nadal will open his bid against either Milos Raonic or Florian Mayer.

The nearest seed to the five-time champion is fellow Spaniard Lopez, who looms as a possible round of 16 opponent. Successful progress through the tournament will likely set a quarterfinal clash with 7th seed Berdych or 12th seed Almagro.

Should the seeds hold through the week, Nadal looks toward a semifinal showdown with world No. 4 Andy Murray or world No. 6 David Ferrer.

Nadal is going to Rome to revenge defeat on slow RED CLAY against Djokovic 4-6 4-6 in 2011. We will see how Nadal plays Raonic.Raonic is find of the decade and he is playing well-beat Andy Murray at Barcelona and almost defeated Federer on the faster Blue Clay at Madrid. Life is interesting with so much tennis on the cards.............

Raonic will be a threat on any surface with experience in 1-2 years when he establishes himself in Top 10.
