  • Federer bidding for third title in Madrid

    5/6/12 7:28 PM | Kelli DeMario
Federer bidding for third title in Madrid World No. 3 Roger Federer will make his 2012 European clay-court season debut, as the ATP World Tour heads to Madrid for the second week of May. The Swiss enters the Masters 1000 event as the third seed.

Roger Federer makes his return to competition after losing a third-round match to Andy Roddick at the Masters 1000 Miami. The 30-year-old veteran has compiled a 23-3 season record, aided by title-winning runs in Rotterdam, Dubai and Indian Wells.

Federer is twice a champion in Madrid, having won the championship crown in 2006 (def. Gonzalez) and 2009 (def. Nadal).

The world No. 3 leads a competitive quarter of the draw that includes (5) David Ferrer, (11) Nicolas Almagro and (14) Richard Gasquet

Other players in the same section are Viktor Troicki, Donald Young, Thomaz Bellucci, Marcel Granollers, Carlos Berlocq, Radek Stepanek and Bernard Tomic.

After an opening-round bye, Federer will begin the tournament against either Milos Raonic or former world No. 3 David Nalbandian.

The nearest seed to the two-time champion is Estoril Open runner-up Gasquet, who looms as a possible round of 16 opponent. Further progress through the event will likely set a quarterfinal clash with fifth seed Ferrer.

Should the seeds hold through the week, Federer looks toward a semifinal showdown with world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

it's nice to see Fed back on the court...it is always more exciting when he is around...basically, more great players better quality of tennis in general....too bad I have hectic situation at work and won't be able to follow the matches, but I will do my best to watch replays...
