• Roddick, Fish to give clay a miss

    5/4/12 8:30 PM | Johan Lindahl
Roddick, Fish to give clay a miss Clay could be a lost cause for two of America's aging tennis warhorses, with both Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish pulling the plug on the Madrid Masters.

The pair claim injuries, with Roddick nursing a right hamstring muscle problem and Fish out of action due to a mystery health issue which struck him six weeks ago after losing badly in Miami.

Roddick, 29, also pulled from Rome for good measure and has made no commitment to the French Open. He might not be back on court until he plays Queen's Club on grass in early June.

It's not like Roddick will miss the dirt: in 2011 he showed up for Madrid and Rome, losing in the first round at each. That was it for him and clay as he skipped Roland Garros with injury.

Fish has refused to speak of whatever his problem is but has hinted that he is feeling shaky both physically and mentally after cracking the ranking top 10 but then apparently feeling guilty about surpassing best mate Roddick, the longtime US standard-bearer.

Replacing the missing Americans will be Dutchman Robin Haase and Olivier Rochus of Belgium.

LOL at claiming that Fish "felt guilty about surpassing Roddick"

Fish was WAY ahead of Roddick for a LONG time before Fish started slumping
