• Andujar heads the field at the Serbia Open

    4/30/12 2:05 PM | Cheryl Murray
Andujar heads the field at the Serbia Open With the withdrawal of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Spaniard Pablo Andujar will feature as the top seed in Belgrade.

Novak Djokovic will not participate in the tournament his family owns in Belgrade. The world No. 1 suffered the death of his grandfather and general fatigue from the spring season caused Djokovic to take this week off.

Marko Djokovic, who is ranked 878th in the world, was awarded a wildcard into the tournament, but he isn’t likely to be a factor for the week.

Pablo Andujar, the world No. 38, snagged the top seed for the tournament, with Andreas Seppi heading the bottom half of the field. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen and David Nalbandian from Argentina round out the draw with the third and fourth seeds.

Italy’s Fabio Fognini, who is playing great tennis right now, comes into Belgrade off a showing in the final of Bucharest. This could be a good opportunity for Fognini to add another great result to his clay season.

One thing I must comment here because it is an obvious mistake (I am sure nobody cares about but still). This tournament is here advertised as "Serbia Open, Belgrade, Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro". There is no Serbia and Montenegro anymore. Those are now two separate countries. So, just Serbia.
Sorry if I sound anal :), I am merely stating the fact :)

Why did Marko play and he has just lost his grandad????

tethys , 5/1/12 10:49 AM

because it was a week ago and the funeral was many days ago. Life goes on.

The Joker hasn't moved on, or he would have played as well.

^^^^^careful tethys, Fedfans will take your comment literally and file it away for use as an excuse in future.................

Djoker didn't withdraw because of his grandad, obviously.

Nole (and everyone else) doesn't have to explain anything to anybody.
My feeling is that he never even meant to take part at SO.
As far as granddad is concerned, it is also obvious Novak was more attached to him than the other two boys who were either babies or not even born when grandpa used to take Novak to tennis practices.
