  • Tomic upends Gulbis, Almagro battles into third round

Tomic upends Gulbis, Almagro battles into third round Bernard Tomic added to the woes of Ernests Gulbis with a straight-set victory over the Latvian in the opening round of Barcelona, while Nicolas Almagro had to fight to advance.

Bernard Tomic def. Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-4

After a great start to the year, Australia’s Bernard Tomic has been in a bit of a lull. Fortunately for him, he met the badly out of form Ernests Gulbis in the first round in Barcelona.

The good news for the Gulbis camp is that he didn’t completely roll over for Tomic. The Latvian managed to win 45% of the points in the match, but he gave up a single break of serve in both sets and couldn’t convert on the three break-point chances he had against Tomic’s serve.

The win marks just the second of the season on clay for the Aussie. He won a single match last week in Monte Carlo before going out in the second round to Alexandr Dolgopolov. Tomic will take on Albert Montanes in the second round.

    Nicolas Almagro (6) def. Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-5, 7-6(3)

Spaniard Nicolas Almagro spent most of this match under pressure. Edouard Roger-Vasselin took advantage of the recent shaky form of Almagro to earn himself break leads in both the first and second sets. Loose points from the forehand side from Roger-Vasselin and better play under pressure from Almagro cost the Frenchman his lead both times and ultimately the match.

Almagro’s form was unimpressive in Monte Carlo as well. He lost in the third round to Stanislas Wawrinka.

Almagro awaits the winner of Igor Andreev and Milos Raonic in the third round.

Unintentional or not, Ricky that was hilarious! :)

My question is: what is wrong with Almagro? He hasn't been playing his expected level for quite some time now............

rafaisthebest , 4/25/12 8:29 AM

............and Montanes struggled against.........Tomic? wtf.........

rafaisthebest , 4/25/12 1:36 PM

danica - I think the clear answer here is "never". He just isn't motivated enough. :(

NNY - it was intentional. :D

RITB - I'm not sure what's wrong with Almagro. He was TERRIBLE in Monte Carlo...really off his game. It's getting to be that he's really much better hard courts.
