    4/24/12 3:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Brands, Seppi advance in Bucharest Daniel Brands ousts Ivan Dodig in straight sets on Tuesday in Bucharest. Brands is joined in the second round by Andreas Seppi, who overcame Guillaume Rufin in three.

    (Q) Daniel Brands d. (8) Ivan Dodig 7-6(4), 6-2

Brands kept up his momentum from having qualified for the main draw by upsetting Dodig in one hour and 40 minutes during first-round action at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Tuesday. The German struck five aces without double-faulting and he never dropped serve, saving all three of the break points he faced.

Dodig managed to stay competitive in the first set by serving well (67 percent) and fighting off two break points. After dropping it in a tiebreaker, however, the 77th-ranked Croat went away in the second. He won a mere four points in four return games, so two donations of his own serve were way too many.

    (6) Andreas Seppi d. (Q) Guillaume Rufin 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4

Rufin qualified for the main draw and had a golden chance to keep his run going against the sixth-seeded Seppi on Monday in Bucharest. The world No. 157 dominated the first set then served for the match at 5-4 in the second. Rufin, however, could not finish the deal and he ended up losing set two in a tiebreaker.

Seppi wrested control of things with an early break in the third. The 46th-ranked Italian soon battled out of a 15-40 deficit at 4-3 and a 0-30 hole at 5-4. A tough hold for Seppi finally ended the proceedings after two hours and 23 minutes. Seppi wrapped up his effort with six aces while converting four of eight break-point chances.
