  • Isner, Fish lead American charge in Houston

    4/9/12 6:05 AM | Ricky Dimon
Isner, Fish lead American charge in Houston The spring clay-court swing officially begins this week in Houston and Casablanca. Americans John Isner and Mardy Fish are the top seeds at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships.

The U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships provide one of the first opportunities for players to fine-tune their games for the season's second Grand Slam.

Houston will once again have an American feel, headlined by a red-hot John Isner and top-seeded Mardy Fish. The United States contingent also includes Ryan Harrison, Sam Querrey, James Blake, and defending champion Ryan Sweeting.

Fish sits atop an upper half of the draw that is far more difficult than the bottom. Among the unseeded threats are Harrison, Querrey, and Xavier Malisse. Seeds Juan Monaco and Kevin Anderson, both of whom are playing stellar tennis, could meet as early as the quarterfinals. Potential quarterfinal opponents for Fish include Harrison and No. 7 seed Alex Bogomolov.

Fresh off Davis Cup heroics in Monte Carlo, where he went 2-0 in singles against France, Isner should not have as much trouble at the bottom of the bracket. He will likely cruise through his opener before running into either Sweeting or fellow big man Ivo Karlovic. Seeds Feliciano Lopez and Carlos Berlocq will hope to derail Isner's path to the title match.
