  • Fish has little to miss in Monte Carlo

    4/5/12 8:22 PM | Johan Lindahl
Fish has little to miss in Monte Carlo Mardy Fish may not be too sad to miss the weekend Davis Cup date against France in Monte Carlo after his only attempt to play the ATP tournament there ended in a quick loss to one of the best on the dirt.

The confirmed Californian has usually followed the lead his home-bond compatriots like Andy Roddick, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi - that trio pair played a combined total of only nine times - missing the European starting date for the clay season. The only time he dared to play - in 2003 - he came up against one of the best on clay and made a hasty exit.

Fish, like many of his tennis countrymen, feels much more comfortable in the US, living in the familiar. That means limiting European trips, especially during the long clay season.

"It's a really tough time looking at the schedule for Americans, it's almost impossible," complained the 30-year-old. "We have to be over there for Madrid and Rome (in May). "Do you stay there for seven weeks, or do you come back and then go back over and have a week and a half off?

"It's a beautiful place, everyone in my family wants to go. My wife wants to go. My dad wants to go so bad just to see it. And I actually got to play," he said of his 2003 first-round exit. "It was one of the first Masters 1000 that I got straight into, at the last minute.

"My coach and I were boarding a plane in Tampa to Atlanta. I saw my draw and I played (three-time French Open winner) Gustavo Kuerten. We almost got back off the plane and went back to Tampa.

"It was a quick trip, because I got in Sunday, played Monday, and I was home on Tuesday."
