• Roddick, Almagro advance at Sony Ericsson Open

    3/26/12 6:21 AM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick, Almagro advance at Sony Ericsson Open Seeded players dominated the Miami second round. Among them were Andy Roddick and Nicolas Almagro, who earned respective wins over Gilles Muller and David Goffin,

    (31) Andy Roddick d. Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2

Roddick dropped his 2011 Sony Ericsson Open opener to unheralded Pablo Cuevas, but there was no such surprise this time around. Nor was there a repeat of Roddick's stunning first-round 2005 U.S. Open loss to Muller. Roddick dominated Muller in one hour and 13 minutes on Saturday to book a third-round showdown against Roger Federer.

The 29-year-old American struck 10 aces while double-faulting only once and he never faced a single break point. He converted only one of seven break chances in the first set, but one was enough. Roddick served out the first set at 5-3 and the second at 5-2 to advance.

    (12) Nicolas Almagro d. (Q) David Goffin 6-4, 6-2

Almagro trailed 4-2 in the first set but won 10 of the next 12 games to dismiss Goffin without any trouble on Saturday evening. The Spaniard served at a mere 46 percent but he won 83 percent of his first-serve points and more than 60 percent of his second-serve points to take care of business following a slow start.

Thus ends a stellar Miami showing for Goffin, who qualified for the main draw then took out Donald Young. Next up for Almagro is an all-Spanish battle against Fernando Verdasco.
