  • Gonzo says goodbye to tennis in Miami

    3/22/12 8:12 PM | Johan Lindahl
Gonzo says goodbye to tennis in Miami Chile's Fernando Gonzalez has said a sad goodbye to tennis, with the 31-year-old packing in his career with a first-round loss at the Miami Masters.

The scenario went as expected for the 2007 Australian Open finalist, who lost 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) to France's Nicolas Mahut.

The player who won nine of his 11 career trophies on clay saved three match points on the way out.

"I was really tired in the end, and I said I don't want to finish with a double fault," said Gonzalez. "The atmosphere was great. I saved match points, but I felt that it was the end. Nicolas played better in the important moments, and I was a little bit tired at the end."

Gonzalez, whose last ATP trophy came on clay in 2009 at Vina del Mar, has been injured but reached the quarter-finals in February at Buenos Aires, where he lost to Spain's David Ferrer. He played only eight matches in 2011. "The past year and a half been pretty tough for my career. I don't have the energy to get up in the morning, train like I have to train, travel like I have to travel. And I been doing this for many years.

"If I'm not gonna be 100 per cent, I have to do something else. I like tennis, I will be around. I have great memories from tennis. But I wasn't enjoying as I enjoyed in the past, that's why I decided to finish my career."

Goodbye Tarzan, it was always a joy to watch you compete! I'll never forget his run to the AO final in 2007 and his RG in 2009. That SF against Soderling was a complete war. And the way he wiped a mark away with his ass still makes me laugh :-)
