  • Murray Davis Cup decision depends on Miami showing

    3/20/12 3:06 AM | Johan Lindahl
Murray Davis Cup decision depends on Miami showing Andy Murray will decide only at the last moment whether to ride to the rescue for Britain as the nation plays Belgium in a Davis Cup zonal tie next month in hopes of returning to the World group.

But Murray, a distant world No. 4 on the ATP, has plenty on his plate with the Miami Masters.

After crashing out of Indian Wells in his opening match - the same fate as last year - the Scot's main hope of the moment is to prevent a repeat in Miami, where he lost a 2011 opener to Alex Bogomolov.

For that reason, there will be no Davis decision by Murray until he knows his fate in the second Masters 1000 of the season. "It depends on how Miami goes,” Murray told Scottish media. "It’s a bit like Indian Wells – I wasn’t planning on having that sort of week. You always plan for the best-case scenario and that’s finishing on Sunday evening with a win and then you go from there."

British Davis Cup captain Leon Smith - a one-time Murray coach - will be in Miami anxious to get the word from his main player, an intermittent Davis participant. "I'll have a chat with Leon next week. I’ll speak to the guys next week about it because obviously the Indian Wells week changes things a little bit because I didn’t play as many matches as I would have hoped. So, I’ll see how Miami goes.”

If Murray decides against going to Scotland for the April 6-8 Easter weekend Davis tie, he is likely to remain at his Florida training base with coach Ivan Lendl preparing for the clay season which begins in mid-April in Monte Carlo.
