  • Ebden ousts Fish, Simon takes care of Wawrinka

    3/13/12 1:38 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ebden ousts Fish, Simon takes care of Wawrinka Qualifier Matthew Ebden is into round four at the BNP Paribas Open after taking out Mardy Fish on Tuesday. Gilles Simon also advances with a straight-set win over Stanislas Wawrinka.

    (Q) Matthew Ebden d. (8) Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4

Ebden turned in another stellar performance and capitalized on another disappointing showing from Fish as the qualifier advanced to the BNP Paribas fourth round after one hour and 24 minutes on Monday afternoon. The Australian qualifier dominated on serve throughout the opening set, losing only six points in five service games. A break of his own midway through the first was easily enough for Ebden.

Things changed in the second, with four consecutive breaks taking place starting at a 1-0 Fish advantage. Fish twice gave back breaks then buckled under the pressure again at 4-4. The 30-year-old American dropped one point due to the hindrance rule (shouting prematurely when he thought he had the point won) and also double-faulted once. Ebden secured the break and served out the match with ease at 5-4. Next up for the world No. 91 is John Isner.

    (13) Gilles Simon d. (23) Stanislas Wawrinka 6-4, 6-4

Simon got past Wawrinka in one hour and 37 minutes during third-round action in Indian Wells on Monday. Despite the exact same scorelines, the two sets could not have been more different. Simon cruised on serve the entire way in the opener, so one break stood up with ease. It looked like the Frenchman would sustain his momentum without any trouble as he raced to a 5-1 lead in the second, but that was not the case.

Wawrinka saved multiple match points serving in the seventh game to hold, broke for 3-5, then held again for 4-5. On the brink of a huge collapse, however, Simon steadied himself and finally served out the match in routine fashion. The world No. 13 struck five aces against one double-fault and capitalized on three of 13 break-point chances. Simon will go up against either Ryan Harrison or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the fourth round.
