    Verdasco sinks Wawrinka, through to Acapulco final Eighth seed Fernando Verdasco advanced to the championship final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, having upended Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets. The Spaniard will face either compatriot David Ferrer or Santiago Giraldo for the title.

    World No. 27 Fernando Verdasco reached the Acapulco final after taking out Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka on Friday. The 28-year-old converted three of 7 break points through to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in 86 minutes.

    Verdasco secured service breaks at 3-3 in the opening set and 3-2 in the second. The Spaniard collected double match point at 5-2, but was unable to convert. After missing a third match point, Verdasco struck a forehand winner on his fourth.

    He completed the day with nine consecutive games held without facing break point.

    Verdasco is slated to meet either two-time defending champion David Ferrer or Santiago Giraldo in Saturday’s final.
