  • Isner headlines Delray Beach, Cilic returns

Isner headlines Delray Beach, Cilic returns With one week to go before Indian Wells, the American hard-court swing continues in Delray Beach. Headlining the field are John Isner, Marin Cilic, Andy Roddick, and Bernard Tomic.

There has been only one U.S. champion (Mardy Fish, 2009) in the last eight years of the Delray Beach International Championships, so the Americans will be looking to put another one on the podium this week.

Leading the charge are top-seeded John Isner and No. 4 seed Andy Roddick. Isner has been playing solid tennis but is looking to bounce back from a quarterfinal loss in Memphis to eventual champion Jurgen Mezler. Roddick has endured an injury-plagued season and hopes to rebound from a first-round Memphis setback against Xavier Malisse.

Isner and Roddick are on a collision course for the semifinals in the top half of the draw. However, Isner is once again in the same quarter as Melzer in addition to eighth-seeded Bernard Tomic. Roddick opens with Philipp Petzschner and could meet either Malisse or Kevin Anderson in the quarterfinals.

Delray Beach also features the return of Marin Cilic, who has not played since last fall due to a knee injury. The draw, though, did not do the 6'6'' Croat any favors. He has to go up against an in-form Jarkko Nieminen in the first round and could face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarters.

A wide open third section of the bracket is led by seeds Viktor Troicki and Alex Bogomolov. Troicki has been inconsistent of late while Bogomolov is struggling to sustain the momentum from an incredible 2011 campaign. 2010 champion Ernests Gulbis and 2010 runner-up Ivo Karlovic are also capable of doing damage as unseeded floaters.

Yes, Cilic finally returns! He may not do well here but I hope he can get ready for the Masters and the clay season. Go Marin!
