Spain's financial crisis could soon have an impact on the high-tech Caja Magica venue where the Madrid Masters is played on clay each May.
Though the city of Madrid a big sponsor of sport in the city, the municipal authorities have their fiscal limits.
Now the city council wants the local tennis federation to start paying more of its way by either charging more for use or getting rid of five indoor courts. One plan was to knock over the building housing the indoor courts and realize some extra income by leading the area to Formula 1 racing, a plan which failed to provide much more detail.
The "Magic Box" venue, where the tennis is held, has been a showstopper in the tennis-mad city since it was completed a few seasons ago. But rejection of an Olympic hosting candidacy proposed for the venue did not help much, with Madrid now stuck with an under-used facility which was to have been used for basketball and concerts.
A decision is to be made by the end of March, with the situation reportedly fluid. Madrid-based ATP players including Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez, have come out against any destruction of the courts and hope that Formula 1 and the city find space for the racing interest on another part of the 17-hectare site in the south of the city.

My 'Good idea'post was responding to bleck's suggestion of a master 1000 on grass not to a master's indoor h/c. There are more than enough h/c tournaments at the moment.

I was being facetious. How 'bout half clay/half grass then?

^^^^ Roger and nadal played an exhibition some years ago in a court that was half clay half grass. lol
it was funny to see how much trouble they had adjusting when they changed to the other half of the court. lol
