  • Soderling depressed over his lingering illness

    2/20/12 9:49 PM | Johan Lindahl
Soderling depressed over his lingering illness Robin Soderling is starting to doubt his comeback chances to tennis after nearly eight months off court as the Swede suffers with glandular fever.

The Swede has not played since last July, when he won his home Bastad event on clay before being fully diagnosed.

Soderling told Stockholm's Svenska Dagbladet that he is unsure of when his return could be. His ranking has dropped from inside the top five to its current 24th, with much more scope to crash. The 27-year-old made his breakthrough with a win over Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, where he played 2009 and 2010 finals.

Soderling told the newspaper his downfall was all his own fault. "In hindsight, I did wrong. I've always been bad at listening to my body. Maybe I pushed myself too hard when I had glandular fever. It may be the reason why I have not made a quick recovery."

Soderling has no idea when he can return. "I try not to worry because it does not make things better, maybe it makes things worse. But I realize that anything can happen. I could feel good enough for another three years, but that might be too late."

Never thought I'd feel sorry for Robin. This is a shame though.

Me too. Robin has never been one of my favourite people since RG 2009, but I do feel sorry for him and hope he does come back soon. It's so sad to be sidelined for such a long time and there is nothing you can do about it. Mono finished Ancic's very promisisng career.

On the other hand, Sod could consult Federer who managed to play through mono, never missing so much as a 250 event. Fed owes him one for getting Rafa out of his path to enable him to win his only clay court slam.

Just like Rafa woes him one to getting nole out of his path to his last RG title.

Fed had his own shares of bad health but never been much vocal like some of other hypocrite like some other Players who even have some cough then issue media statements.

e.g. After his Africa 2010 trip due to illness he was hospitalized for multiple days but never been much vocal about it in media.if some other particular player had been in same condition he had issued a media release.

Also Soderling is great player wish him a speedy recovery he is better player than some of current Top 5-8 player.

Why can't Fedfans be original. I am tired of you guys taking everything I say and twisting it to include Rafa. Rafa is 6 times RG champion, it is conjecture that Nole would have beaten him had they met in the final. That could have broken the Nole streak. On the other hand except for that one occasion, Federer has been stopped winning RG by no other than Rafa.

I don't care if Federer was hospitalised or not, all I know is if he did suffer from mono I don't understand how he could play through it never missing a match when others suffering from it are laid up for months if not years.

Anyway, it's my bed time now.

mono severity varies wildly from person to person. My roommate in college had it and she was fine 2 weeks later. I also had a friend in high school who contracted it and he was out of school for months and almost couldn't graduate because he was so ill.

It doesn't surprise me that it ended Ancic's career, nor that Federer was mostly recovered in a couple of weeks. This is the nature of the illness.

mani, Fed do owe Sod for getting Rafa out of the way at RG, as Fed has again proven that with Rafa in the final, Fed can never win the FO, case in point, that FO 2011 final. Your case that Nole would beat Rafa at the FO final is not proven, I'm afraid, so don't try and equate that to Fed/Rafa at the FO final! Do remember that Nole has never reached a FO final, whilst Rafa has won six FO titles! Rafa doesn't owe Fed anything, even though you as a Fed fan wants to 'heap gold' on Fed's face as if he's the savior of Rafa!

On another note, I do feel sorry for Sod. Yes, he should listen to his body and not push it over the limit, something Rafa experienced in 2009 during the clay season, and paid the price for it. If not for that Rafa may have his best season ever, and has more slams by now at the expense of Fed!

I am with Maya and nadline. Sod has never been a favorite of mine, but still you just hate to see someone sidelined like this for such a long time. It is a mysterious illness that can be somewhat mild or extremely severe.

It seems that Sod is aware that he ignored the signs that something was wrong and tried to play through it. These are the prime years of his tennis career and I sincerely hope he can make it back. No way do I want to see any player taken out of the game due to injury or illness.

Nativenewyorker , 2/22/12 5:40 AM

But cheryl, we are constantly being told by Fedfans that his mono was why Rafa overtook him in the rankings and they used it as an excuse for nearly 2 years. Either he had the mild form in which case his tennis wasn't affected or he had the acute case which means he shouldn't have been able to compete without and remain in the top 2 of the world rankings.

nadline , 2/22/12 8:43 AM

Nadline, always attacking Roger whatever the topic of the thread. Geez...

Feel sorry for Soderling. He was the best player after the top 4 when he stopped playing so he had some chance of making another slam final and possibly winning it.

bleck , 2/22/12 10:06 AM

Since when has a statement of fact become an attack?

nadline , 2/22/12 10:34 AM

Not my favourite player but you wouldn't wish this on anyone. Poor old Sod, it can be a horrible disabilitating illness . Unlikely to get back in top 10 I'd have thought.

deuce , 2/22/12 11:23 AM

Nadline - I won't claim to be a trained physician, but I've known many folks who have had mono. My neighbor's son got mono last year. He got over his symptoms after about 3 weeks, but there was residual fatigue for at least several months after he was "better".

I don't know about the "2 years" excuse (though I haven't personally seen anyone use the mono argument after 2 years), but it wouldn't surprise me if Roger had lost a step or two for a couple of months. Like I said, I've seen it happen.

Back on topic, I hope Robin can finally get better. The worst possible thing is to push oneself too hard while you have it...and it sounds like that's exactly what he did. Poor bloke.

cherylmurray , 2/22/12 7:33 PM

^^^^I see. It sounds like it comes a varying degrees and as I have never known anyone who has suffered with it, I can't argue. I wonder why it's so common in tennis.

nadline , 2/22/12 10:38 PM

The reason why it's so common in tennis is that interestingly enough, high intensity exercise has been found to cause immunodeppressive effects on the body which can lead to illnesses like glandular fever, particularly if there is an underlying condition already (eg. a virus) . Who would have thought that elite sportsman are more vulnerable to certain illnesses than the common person?

jrbro4 , 2/22/12 11:03 PM

^^^ not to mention the fact that, like college dorm rooms, these guys are around each other all the time. It IS communicative, so there is a greater likelihood of contracting it if one guy gets it.

cherylmurray , 2/23/12 2:21 AM

^^^Does this apply to the locker room? I hope not.
