• Federer deflected pressure of Rotterdam return

    2/16/12 6:16 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer deflected pressure of Rotterdam return Roger Federer had more than just a routine win at stake when he returned to the Rotterdam ATP event for his first match since winning the 2005 title.

The record sold-out crowd of more than 9,900 was expecting a dominant performance from the tennis hero - and they got it as the Swiss moved through 6-4, 6-4 over Nicolas Mahut.

There was extra pressure on Federer behind the scenes, after the pre-match withdrawal of intended second-round opponent Mikhail Youzhny with a left foot injury. The win over Mahut in 67 minutes put Federer directly into the quarterfinals against Finn Jarkko Nieminen.

"I was trying hard to win, that's the rule out there," said Federer, who entered and exited to standing ovations. "It doesn't matter how ugly or pretty, it's about coming through and see what can improve in the next round. It's trying to manage nerves and expectations.

"There were a lot of expectations for me in the first round, not having been here for so long. I'm happy I came through. Nicolas can play good tennis. I was clearly lacking rhythm coming from a completely different surface. I found a way to win and from now on hopefully I'll play even better."
