Nicolas Almagro takes care of Andrey Golubev in four sets on Friday in Spain. The host team now leads Kazakhstan 2-0 in the first round of the Davis Cup.
Nicolas Almagro rarely gets to play Davis Cup, but he made the most of his opportunity on Friday evening. He also made it a lot less stressful on the Spanish fans than Juan Carlos Ferrero did in the previous rubber.
After Ferrero's five-set win over Mikhail Kukushkin, Almagro defeated Andrey Golubev 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. Almagro needed two hours and 23 minutes to put the defending champions ahead of Kazakhstan 2-0 in their first-round tie.
The world No. 11 won almost half of his return points (49 of 103) and broke serve a whopping eight times. He struck 24 winners and committed exactly half as many unforced errors as Golubev (28 to 56).
Almagro's only blemish came in the second set, when he donated serve twice. Golubev gave back an immediate break, but the underdog Kazakh struck again before serving out the set at 5-4.
Still, it was just a blip on the radar screen for Almagro. The crowd favorite promptly woke up and lost only two games the entire rest of the way. He finished off the proceedings in appropriate fashion, breaking at 5-1 in the fourth to clinch victory.
"I'm very happy with my tennis today," said Almagro. "I think I played my best tennis in Davis Cup. It's very fun to play here in Spain. I think it's perfect when you play in your country.... Now we need one more point, so we see what happen tomorrow in the doubles."
