World No. 23 Juan Monaco is set to open the tie for Argentina on Friday, as he squares off against Germany’s Philipp Petzschner. A critical second singles rubber features Florian Mayer and Davis Cup standout David Nalbandian.
Juan Monaco vs. Philipp Petzschner
Juan Monaco enters the tie on a high note, having put together a title-winning run at the VTR Open. The 27-year-old has tallied five singles wins for Argentina since his debut in 2004.
World No. 56 Philipp Petzschner is bidding for his third singles victory for team Germany. The 27-year-old looks to regroup after suffering a first-round loss to Jurgen Melzer in Zagreb.
Florian Mayer vs. David Nalbandian
World No. 84 David Nalbandian holds a narrow 2-1 series lead over world No. 21 Florian Mayer. The players last clashed at the 2011 Masters 1000 Shanghai, where the German recorded a second-round win in straight sets.
Mayer will be contesting his seventh tie for host nation Germany. He has collected four singles victories since his first Davis Cup appearance in 2004.
Friday signals the 23rd Davis Cup appearance for Nalbandian. The Cordoba native has compiled a 22-5 singles record since he played his first tie in 2002. His last effort came during the 2011 final against Spain, in which he and partner Eduardo Schwank lost in doubles to Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco.
