Chile's Fernando Gonzalez has given himself a retirement date of March as the former No. 5 prepares to end his career at next month's Miami Masters.
The 31-year-old has not been the same since 2010 hip surgery which put his form and formidable forehand on the slippery slope.
Gonzalez played in only five ATP events in 2011 and tried his luck this month by winning a round in Chile. But the No. 268, who played the Australian Open final five years ago against Roger Federer has now admitted that the end has come.
"These have been very hard months for me, during which I realised I don't have the energy I need nor am I prepared to do all I have to do to be where I want to be," he said. "I'm retiring but I want to remain close to tennis."
And the winner of three Olympic medals already has a post-career plan. "After mourning the end of my career there will be nothing better than to work in my foundation (which seeks to develop the sport in his native Chile).
"I had great times - the Australian Open final, the two Olympic Games. I've always been struck by the thrill of the crowds, it's something you don't forget."

Yes I wish him all the best after his retirement. He's such an exciting player to watch, and what an awesome forehand! He was still doing well in 2009, reaching the semis of FO, and had such an exciting and good five set match against Roddick at the AO in 2010. He was playing some of his best tennis in that match! Oh I'll never forget how scarily good he was on clay, by beating another big forehand fella, Verdasco, at Barcelona in 2009. Such awesome forehand, my goodness!

I watched him practice with Nole at Serbia Open last year. He was just coming back to touring and playing after a long absence. I am so sorry to hear he feels it's time to call it quits.
Good luck Gonzo!
