The improbable Olympic mixed doubles dream team of Roger Federer and Martina Hingis has finally met its end.
Federer told Milan's La Gazzetta dello Sport that the pairing will definitely not now happen after a telephone discussion between the pair of current and former Swiss stars.
Federer will now concentrate on his ATP season and the summer Games at Wimbledon while the retired Hingis will stick to her new coaching career in Paris.
"It's an amazing once in a lifetime experience and may never come again in our lifetimes," Federer said of the London Olympics to be played at the iconic Grand Slam venue. "It's a big, big milestone for tennis at the Olympics for all players of my generation."
The not-unexpected Federer announcement put the final nail in the coffin of a mixed doubles pairing which was never to be, with Hingis now out of the game for more than four years and without the official qualifications or ranking necessary to qualify for the Games. The three-time Australian Open winner in the 1990s said as much only a few weeks ago in Melbourne.
"Actually I didn't know mixed doubles was a part of the Olympics," said Federer. "The only partner I could imagine myself playing with was Martina because she's been such an amazing player from such a young age.
"I spoke with her on the phone and she said 'I don't think we should do it, I would love to do it but you should concentrate on the singles and doubles.'
"So I said 'ok, we don't do it, we're both very happy, you're happy in retirement and I'm happy on court.' It was a good conversation, in a way I'm disappointed but it was the smart decision to make."
