With a full deck of cards in its hand, Switzerland is hosting the United States in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group. Stanislas Wawrinka kicks off the action on Friday against Mardy Fish.
Stanislas Wawrinka and Mardy Fish will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers when they clash in the first rubber of the opening-round Davis Cup World Group tie between Switzerland and the United States.
Fish has won both of their previous encounters, although they have never faced each other on clay. The American prevailed 6-3, 6-3 five years ago in New Haven and scored a 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-0 victory at last summer's Canada Masters.
Wawrinka, however, is playing at home this time on the clay courts of Fribourg. The world No. 28 is not in great form following a lackluster second half of his 2012 campaign, but he is playing decent tennis. Wawrinka advanced to the Chennai quarterfinals and won two rounds at the Australian Open before losing to Nicolas Almagro.
Fish, on the other hand, is off to an extremely slow start in the aftermath of a stellar 2011 season. The 30-year-old played poorly at the Hopman Cup then suffered a straight-set upset at the hands of Alejandro Falla during second-round action in Melbourne.
The ideal setting for Fish is a fast hard court in the United States. A clay court in Switzerland? Not so much. With home-court advantage and an edge in current form, Wawrinka should get the job done in four sets.
