  • Federer the lone elite to front up for Davis Cup

    2/9/12 3:06 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer the lone elite to front up for Davis Cup It could well be Roger Federer against the world in first-round Davis Cup play, with the Swiss the lone member of the ATP elite set to front up to at the weekend.

With a Davis Cup title and an Olympic singles gold medal two of the only honors missing from the curriculum of the 16-time Grand Slam winner, Federer is keen to try his luck in 2012.

He will lead a Swiss side on indoor clay at home at the Forum Fribourg against the badly depleted US. The Americans, who own a record 32 Davis titles but have lifted only one in the past 16 years, are coming in without injured Andy Roddick and new father Bob Bryan.

"I'm really looking forward to this encounter, all the more so given that we can play in Switzerland," said Federer, who--in contrast to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray--is playing a full February schedule.

"(Clay was) undoubtedly the right decision, even if it's unusual to suddenly be playing on clay in February. The US certainly have a team that can beat us, however. All their players are dangerous, in the singles and in the doubles."

Australasian Open champion Djokovic won't be present when Serbia faces Sweden, while Nadal is resting himself after his Melbourne finals loss to Djokovic and will not play until Indian Wells, well over a month away. Andy Murray is skipping a minor league British date against Slovakia.

Joining Federer at home will be Stanislas Wawrinka, Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer while the US will feature No. 8 Mardy Fish and John Isner in singles along with backup Ryan Harrison and specialist Mike Bryan for doubles.

oh my god !!! Roger is going to play davis cup . I smell that 2012 is the last year of his career and he knows it and I think he wants to win olympics and davis cup badly .

I agree -it might be his year and a non calendar GS by Aussie open next year to get a 5th title- with Olympics and Davis Cup- there would then be no debate on the greatest player in this sport
