Roger Federer will make a rare appearance in Davis Cup World Group action as he takes the court for the first round this weekend. Federer and the Swiss team are playing host to the United States.
Switzerland and the United States will be squaring off in the first round of the 2012 Davis Cup World Group this weekend this weekend in Fribourg. Not surprisingly, the home team has chosen to host their American counterparts on red clay.
The overall head-to-head series stands at 2-1 in the Americans' favor. Home-court advantage is such a crucial part of Davis Cup, and this is one of many matchups that reflects it. The United States won both times at home while Switzerland prevailed when it hosted the tie. Most recently, the USA had all hands on deck for a 4-1 win in the 2009 opening round, while the Swiss played without Federer.
Now the roles are reversed. Roger Federer, who normally makes appearances exclusively to save his country from relegation, will be suiting up for Switzerland. Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, the doubles gold-winning team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, are scheduled to lead the Swiss squad in singles and doubles. Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer are also on the roster.
The Americans, on the other hand, are without Andy Roddick and--even more importantly--Mike Bryan. They almost certainly have to win the doubles rubber with in order to combat Federer's expected singles dominance, but the Bryan Brothers team is broken up as Bob is absent following the birth of his first child. Up-and-coming Ryan Harrison may get the nod to play with Mike.
Mardy Fish and John Isner will lead the way for the United States in singles. Both players are coming off relatively lackluster performances at the Australian Open, and neither one is particularly adept on the slow stuff.
