Novak Djokovic may be turning his back on Serbian Davis Cup play for 2012, with the newly-crowned Australian Open winner blaming his increasingly crowded schedule for his possible campaign-long absence.
What the new Laureus award winner called a "packed agenda" might mean him skipping team play - if Serbia get past Sweden at the weekend - for the remainder of the season as a possible calendar-year Grand Slam beckons.
Djokovic had apparently never planned to play in the first-round tie, preferring to rest after his third trophy in Melbourne and fifth Grand Slam title after claiming three majors in 2011. "I'm sorry I will not play against Sweden in Nis. I cannot promise that I will take part in this competition this year," Djokovic told Serbian media.
The national sporting hero is due to defend his title in Dubai in a fortnight, in a field set to also include Roger Federer and Andy Murray.
Djokovic, winner of ten titles in a record-setting 2011, is concentrating on Grand Slams and Masters 1000 trophies in 2012, not to mention the dream of a London Olympic gold medal this summer. He may even be ready to skip his family's clay-court Serbian open in the run-up to Roland Garros in May.
"I'm on the entry list but it will be difficult to organize everything," he confessed. "In order to play, I would have to make radical changes in my agenda."
