Top seed Juan Monaco took home his fourth ATP World Tour title, having held on to defeat fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq in three sets. The 27-year-old won his first championship since 2007.
World No. 29 Juan Monaco sealed a championship-winning run with a three-set ousting of compatriot Carlos Berlocq Sunday evening. The top seed held 14 of 15 service games through to a 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-1 victory in two hours and 46 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Monaco secured a key service break at 2-1 in the third. An insurance break came at 4-1 for the 27-year-old, who completed the successful effort with four of seven break chances converted.
"Third time is lucky they say, so this time it’s true," Monaco said. "I'm very happy to be champion again. I lost the last seven finals, so this is a very special moment for me. I'm very happy because I fought a lot, I practiced a lot and I was thinking a lot about winning a tournament again. (The victory gives me) confidence and motivation."
Monaco had not won a title since 2007, when he took home championship crowns in Buenos Aires, Poertschach and Kitzbuhel. He reached seven finals after his trio of wins, which include runner-up finishes in Vina del Mar in 2008 and 2010.
"It was a hard final," the champion explained. "At the beginning I felt I was playing very well. Then in the second set I started playing a little bit nervous and he came back, fought a lot, and at that time played really well. I tried to be very focused, tried to fight for every point like it was the last one and I started playing better every game."
Monaco will have a few days rest before home nation Argentina travels to Germany for first-round Davis Cup competition.
