Tomas Berdych survives Gael Monfils in three sets to win the Montpellier title on Sunday. Berdych captures the seventh ATP winner's trophy of his career.
Tomas Berdych defeated Gael Monfils 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the Open Sud de France on Sunday afternoon. Playing in his 13th career final, Berdych needed two hours and five minutes to win his seventh ATP title.
Berdych had not come close to dropping a set prior to the title match while Monfils had the pressure of playing at home in France and dealing with a dismal 4-12 career record in ATP finals. The opener reflected both trends, with Berdych dominating his opponent from start to finish. Montpellier's No. 1 seed broke right away for a 2-0 lead, saved all three of the break points he faced, and added another break at 5-2 to close out the set in style.
Monfils turned the tide at 3-3 in the second. Berdych saved one break point with a serve-forehand combination, but he double-faulted on the next point and sent a backhand volley well long to donate serve. Monfils promptly fought off three break points in the following game before serving out the set at love at 5-4.
The final turning point came with Monfils serving at 3-4 in the third. The 13th-ranked Frenchman dug out of a 15-40 hole but soon faced another break point at ad-out. Berdych had been dominating second-serve return points, so Monfils went for too much on a second serve and double-faulted to throw the game away. Berdych then served out the match to 30, clinching victory with his 12th ace of the day.
The seventh-ranked Czech improves to 7-6 lifetime in ATP finals. Monfils has already finished runner-up twice this season, having previously lost to countryman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Doha title match.
