With Spain's economy in shambles, Rafael Nadal may have found himself in the fiscal cross-hairs as the local taxman struggles for cash.
The Australian Open finalist, who has earned nearly $50 million on court during his career, has issued a statement to combat the latest reports from Spanish media regarding his financial affairs.
A website and a celebrity magazine reported that Nadal advisers had set up companies in the Basque region of northwest Spain to help cut the Nadal tax bill. Firms in that region can benefit from special tax rules, with the companies who deal with Nadal's image rights based there.
But Nadal's management said that the companies had been transferred to the player's home island of Mallorca, where more strict Spanish tax rules apply. "The companies mentioned and the tennis player himself are up to date with the payment of all their tax obligations," said a statement form the Nadal camp.
"Since the start of his career Rafa has always wanted to maintain his residence in Spain and that's the way it has been, reaffirming his commitment as a Spaniard on, as well as off, the court."

Rafa has his tax consultants and accountants, also his dad and uncles, to help him manage his wealth. Let Rafa remains a sportsman and concentrates on his tennis career. To me, Rafa will always be a sportsman for life, he doesn't seem like one who's a shrewd businessman or investor. Let those wealth management matters be in the good hands of his wealth maanger(s).
Rafa is having his own tennis academy soon, so I guess after his tennis career, he may be involved in his own academy, or maybe he'll go and play some golf! Money matters? It's best leaving it to the professionals to handle them.

Good for Rafa for being a spaniard not only in words but inddeds by living in his own country instead of being a tax exile.
