Tomas Berdych is through to the Montpellier final after easing past Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets on Saturday. Berdych will battle Gael Monfils for the 250-point title.
Tomas Berdych won all 34 of his first-serve points as he took care of Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Open Sud de France on Saturday. Berdych needed just one hour and 22 minutes to book his spot in the title match alongside Gael Monfils.
Kohlschreiber dropped serve early in the first set but at least gave his opponent a decent fight. The underdog German got a look at four break chances only to capitalize on none of them. Berdych served out the opening frame of play at 5-3 for an early lead.
A break in the very first game of the second set proved to be the difference. Berdych broke right away and never gave it back, saving one more break point in the process. The seventh-ranked Czech held easily at 5-4 to put Kohlschreiber away.
Kohlschreiber fired 11 aces while double-faulting only once, but he was under constant pressure whenever Berdych got a racket on the first serve. Both players won 47 percent of their second-serve points, while Berdych rarely let his opponent off the hook whenever he dictated rallies from the start.
Montpellier's No. 1 seed is through to his 13th career ATP final.
