The Barcelona Open tennis event, won six of the last seven years by Rafael Nadal, will shift the spotlight onto another famed Spaniard when Manolo Santana is honored during the clay event in April.
The ATP tournament run by the Real Club de Tenis has a tradition of honoring the champion from half a century earlier, such is its long history in the sport.
Santana, who currently runs the Madrid Masters for Ion Tiriac, lifted the Barcelona title in 1962. The member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame will attend the tennis week, which was won by home players for four of the seven years before Nadal arrived on the scene.
"I'm looking forward to the tournament," said Santana. "They've always treated me exquisitely and I feel at home in Barcelona. I'll gladly come to this year’s edition of the event."
Santana is one of only ten players that clinched the singles and doubles title in the same year in Barcelona. His moment came in 1970 when he beat Rod Laver in the singles and doubles finals.
