  • Murray claims injuries in Davis Cup opt-out

    2/1/12 7:08 PM | Johan Lindahl
Murray claims injuries in Davis Cup opt-out After another Australian Open heartbreak, it might not come as a surprise that Andy Murray just cannot summon the will to play Davis Cup for Britain in yet another junior-level tie.

The world No. 4, who was defeated in five demoralizing sets in the Melbourne semifinals by Novak Djokovic, has announced that unspecified injuries suffered in Melbourne will keep him from the court in Glasgow against Slovakia for a Euro/Africa Zone Group I contest February 10-12.

"I'm gutted to miss out on the Davis Cup having really enjoyed playing last year," Murray said in a statement. "But as it's only the start of an important season, which includes the Olympics in London, it's probably a sensible decision."

Murray is joined as an opt-out by Serbia's Djokovic and Melbourne finalist Rafael Nadal of Spain, who said in advance that he would take the entire month of February off. Roger Federer, by contrast, has a full calendar planned, with Davis Cup duties for Switzerland against the US followed by the Rotterdam ATP indoor event and Dubai on hard courts.

"My focus in 2012 is on performing well in the Grand Slams and the London 2012 Olympics," Murray said. "I look forward to playing in the next Davis Cup tie later in the year."

Go away with "heartbreak" rubbish! Up to final Andy had hit more winners than any other top 4. He is slowly changing his game. In his match against Nole he hit MORE forehand winners! He was standing on the service line to take the ball early. He too 20 odd games off Nole. He was calm and focused, didn't shout at box, didn't fidget, didn't get down on himself etc. So much to go forward with.
As another poster said, he is maturing in front of our eyes. Come on Andy!

What are we to think. Federer has been hailed as the best at tailoring his calendar and not overplaying. Now it appears that the other three are lagging behind him for curtailing their calendar. In actual fact, I don't think any of them is better than the others, its just how things pan out for them individually.

Rafa plays a lot in the clay season because he gains a lot of points there and it would be stupid of him not to capitalise on that, Andy gains a lot of points in the autumn and Roger wins the WTF and Basle.

Andy only played DC last year to qaualify for the olympics, he doesn't like carrying the whole team because he thinks it not be a one man band. But a one man band it is for GB at the moment.
