Bob Bryan makes a mad dash to try to make the birth of his first child.
Bob Bryan hopped a Qantas jet just 12 hours after he and brother Mike lost a bid for a record 12th Grand Slam title at a major, with the pair leaving the Australian Open in a hurry in order for father-to-be Bob to try and reach his wife in Miami before the birth of his first child.
The Americans put aside their disappointment at losing in straight sets to Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek in the weekend final.
Bob's wife Michelle had been due to give birth on Saturday, in direct conflict with the doubles final. But after hearing no word on any new developments, the expectant father went onto the court at the Australian Open with his mind at ease on the family front.
"I was hoping we could get it done (win), then go home and have a baby," said the 33-year-old. "She's been in bed the last few days, not doing anything. She's been a trooper, she's done her job - we almost did our job. I'm going in to the hospital Monday, and that's gonna be another battle. "
The family affair will cause Bob to miss the US Davis Cup trio to Switzerland for the February 8-10 tie, with Mike going along to anchor the doubles team with a partner to be chosen.
