Roger Federer has the weight of Rod Laver's backing as a strong favourite heading into the business end of the Australian Open, with the tennis icon tipping the legend-to-be as potential trophy winner at this edition.
Federer is bidding for a fifth title at Melbourne Park and a first grand Slam trophy in 24 months, since beating Andy Murray in the 2010 final. Laver, last man to win the calendar-year Grand Slam in 1969, arrived this week in Melbourne from his California base and is guest of honour in the big house which bears his name at Melbourne Park.
"Roger looks like he's playing his best tennis, he's a little more confident. He's going for his shots and they are going in. It is a gut feeling that I think Roger will be in the final," Laver said in an interview with G" Laver told dpa, the German news agency. "Lots of times, he goes for his shots and they keep missing or he mistimes the ball. I don't see that at this very moment."
Laver, 73, said that Federer's rivalry with semi-final opponent Nadal reminds him of his own duels with Ken Rosewall. "Rivalries create great tennis, and that's the thing I've had with Ken Rosewall. We played a lot of matches, you like the challenge.
"It's nice to win the tournament, but you also want to play the best and beat the best. And that's what challenges are."
