Roger Federer has full confidence in his game after passing what he called his first real test at the Australian Open, emerging with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Aussie teenaged talent Bernard Tomic.
The Swiss third seed next faces a re-run of the 2009 US Open final when he plays Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in a quarterfinal.
Federer was pleased to have easily handled world No. 38 Tomic, now firmly established as heir apparent to Lleyton Hewitt. "This was my first real match from the baseline where I had to work extremely hard where it wasn't just reacting," said the 16-time Grand Slam champion.
"I'm happy with how I'm feeling, so it's important to rest up well and then attack again in the court," he said of his Del Potro date. "It's going to be tough against him.
"I don't look beyond that because he's coming up strong," Federer said of the player who beat him for the 2009 US Open trophy. "He's had a good year and he played all the top guys again in the last year and pushed us all.
"I figure six months after I played (and beat) him in Cincinnati he's going to be a better player. He's got massive potential, and he'll be part of the top 10 for probably a long time."
Since the Argentine won the US Open title three years ago in a surprise over the Swiss, the pair has split two other matches, with Federer winning their last in August, 2011.
