Roger Federer dodged a bullet with a timely withdrawal from his second-round opponent keeping alive his streak of not playing anywhere at the Australian Open save the main showcourt since 2004.
Before German Andreas Beck withdrew from their match with a back problem, Federer faced a match in "exile" in the Melbourne Park Outback at the Hisense arena.
The announcement that Federer would not be at his usual place on the Rod Laver arena was something of an historical footnote: the last time the winner of more Grand Slam singles titles than any man in history was away from the Big House was in long-ago 2004.
That date was just six months after he claimed his first major at Wimbledon and began his run through the record books which continues to this day.
While the Hinsene - once upon a time the Vodafone and before that a pleasant patch of grass - is nothing more than a long hike from the main action, the second-round contest against German Andreas Beck marked the end of a run of 52 straight Open matches played on Laver for Federer.

People who pay the most expensive tickets, i.e. to the Rod Laver arena, want nothing but the best. And the best is Roger Federer.

Ah, that figures. They finally realized that Rafa was the best so they swapped them round, put Rafa on Rod Laver and sent Roger into exile at Hisense.

nadal's first match must have been something then. Since he played his first match at Hisense, I mean exile.
Maybe nadal's match against Haas will make him play at hisense again. From what I've read from some nadal fans it was far from a spectacular match.

ha ha thanks bleck that one made me laugh out loud.
The one special treatment Fed gets is that he seems to usually play on the opening day. This is probably because he's the most popular and recognized player, followed by Nadal. All this other stuff about easier draws is pathetic though...those are random. If you actually did an analysis of rankings, etc. you will find sometimes one has an easier draw and vice versa (and there is some bias in wanting to have a Fed-Nadal final).

nice on Bleck ...i was actually LOL ..
I was wondering to myself how would someone conclude preferential treatment when Fed was given HiSense for the first time in a long time ...isnt that the opposite of preferential ? or was it that his opponent pulled out being the preferential treatment ...beck just couldnt stand Fed playing in Hisense ..hahaha..
im in no way a Fedal fan ...but talk about blind hatred ! .

Did we go back in time? He WAS the best, like 4 years ago. Right now, Nole, Rafa and perhaps Andy are all better.
