  • No big upsets as Roddick, Ferrer and Raonic advance

    1/17/12 2:59 PM | Cheryl Murray
No big upsets as Roddick, Ferrer and Raonic advance The seeds in the top section of the draw remain intact as David Ferrer, Andy Roddick and Milos Raonic enjoy successful openers in Melbourne.

    David Ferrer (5) def. Rui Machado 6-1, 6-4, 6-2

Spain’s David Ferrer, who won the Auckland title last week, increased his year-to-date record to 5-0 with a straight-set victory over Portugal’s Rui Machado. The Spaniard, who is one of the best returners in the men’s game right now, broke seven times in the three-set match.

Though Ferrer just finished his last tournament a couple of days ago, he showed no signs of fatigue. Machado was only truly in the match in the middle frame; otherwise, Ferrer dominated from the baseline. Ferrer’s next opponent will be Ryan Sweeting of the United States.

    Andy Roddick (15) def. Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4, 6-1

American Andy Roddick was impressive in what could have been a tricky first-round match with the big-serving Dutchman Robin Haase. Roddick served well enough with 13 aces on the match and 72% first serves in. Still, Haase advanced the Roddick cause by serving up a double-fault on break point in both the first and second sets.

Roddick will take on old foe Lleyton Hewitt in the second round.

    Milos Raonic (23) def. Filippo Volandri 6-4, 6-0, 6-2

Canadian Milos Raonic got the job done on Court 19, dishing out a second-set bagel to Italy’s Filippo Volandri on his way to a straight-set victory. The Canadian served at 62%, but he wasn’t broken at all and he managed to secure 6 breaks of the Volandri serve. The two men were on court just 91 minutes.

Raonic will take on Germany’s Philipp Petzschner in the second round.
