Australia’s top-ranked player Bernard Tomic rallied from a two-set deficit against Fernando Verdasco to cap an upset victory.
After the first day of play, the Australian Open already boasts a come-from-behind victory. Bernard Tomic, the Aussie teenager who has become a Melbourne crowd favorite, mounted an impressive campaign in the final three sets to send the No. 22 seed packing.
Fernando Verdasco of Spain was better in the opening set. He secured a single service break to take the early lead, but the drama of the match was already heating up in the second set.
Both Tomic and Verdasco secured a pair of breaks in the second set, but it was Tomic who earned a set point on Verdasco, which he could have taken with an easy sitter forehand. The Aussie missed, and Verdasco held and eventually took the set in the tiebreaker.
By the third set, Tomic looked tired, over-heated and as though he would lose to the Spaniard in straight sets. But the Aussie didn’t give up. He managed to hold through the third set and was rewarded for his efforts when Verdasco offered up a shoddy service game that ended with a double-fault on break point. The single service break allowed Tomic to win the set and kept him in the match.
Verdasco's game disintegrated in the fourth set and Tomic completely dominated him. The Aussie hit just three unforced errors in the set, while smacking 12 winners. Verdasco gave up three service breaks and after just over half an hour for the set, the two men were contesting the deciding fifth.
The best tennis of the day came in the fifth set. Proceedings remained on serve until 5-5, when Verdasco over-cooked a forehand to give Tomic the 6-5 lead and the chance to serve out the match.

Great match!Tomic has a lot of potential although he played too passive at first.
