Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro moved a step closer to a possible quarterfinal showdown with first round wins at the Aussie Open.
Roger Federer (3) def. Alexander Kudryavstev 7-5, 6-2, 6-2
World No. 3 Roger Federer had a routine straight-set win over Russian qualifier Alexander Kudryavstev to kick off his 2012 Australian Open bid. The Swiss man smacked 14 aces, and hit 10 more winners than unforced errors. Federer dropped serve once in the third set, but he secured a trio of breaks himself to secure the set and the match 6-2.
Federer moves into the second round, where he will take on German Andreas Beck.
Juan Martin Del Potro (11) def. Adrian Mannarino 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4
After a plodding start, Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro found his game to oust France’s Adrian Mannarino. This was not Del Potro at his best. The Argentine smacked 12 aces, but he also threw in 6 double faults. He hit more unforced errors (39) than winners (35), but it was still good enough to get past the Frenchman, who is ranked 91 in the world, but the Argentine will need to improve as he progresses in the draw.
Del Potro’s second round opponent will be Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia.
