  • Berdych beats Ramos, Nalbandian also advances

    1/16/12 3:37 PM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych beats Ramos, Nalbandian also advances David Nalbandian and Tomas Berdych reach the Australian Open second round on Monday. Berdych takes care of Albert Ramos and Nalbandian gets a retirement from Jarkko Nieminen.

    (7) Tomas Berdych d. Albert Ramos 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

Playing his first ATP match of the season, Berdych started slow but then ran away from Ramos during first-round Australian Open action on Monday afternoon in Melbourne. Berdych fired seven aces and won 88 percent of his first-serve points to prevail after two hours and 52 minutes of play. The seventh-ranked Czech survived a tough opening set by breaking at 6-5, but Ramos needed just one break of his own to take the second.

While the 23-year-old Spaniard had momentum, it only proved to be a wakeup call for Berdych. The No. 7 seed saved all three of the break points he faced throughout the third and fourth sets to keep the pressure on Ramos. A break ended set three in style and Berdych added one more break in the fourth before serving it out at 5-3. Next up for the victor is Auckland runner-up Olivier Rochus.

David Nalbandian d. Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 4-2, retired

Playing one day after after appearing in a rain-delayed Sydney title match, in which he beat Julien Benneteau, Nieminen retired with an abdominal strain just one hour and seven minutes in Monday night's match against Nalbandian. The Finn made it competitive throughout the first set, but he began to suffer after his opponent served it out at 5-4.

Nalbandian, who did not get broken in the first, suddenly dropped serve twice in the second. It did not matter, though, because Nieminen could not come close to holding serve--getting broken three straight times. He called it quits while facing break point in the seventh game of set two. Nalbandian advances to face John Isner in the second round.
