Roger Federer has stepped up his training sessions to full strength with the Swiss putting his recent back spasm episode into the rear-view mirror as the Australian Open begins.
The record-holding 16-time Grand Slam champion is aiming to plug a gap in his CV after winning his last major 24 months ago in Melbourne.
But any run at the trophy for the no. 3 has to depend on his fitness, which the 30-year-old says is almost back to perfect.
"It's good. It's come along well since I arrived, really," the rarely injured Federer said. "I'm happy it's back to normal now, basically, and just now getting over playing a bit scared."
During his private training with his team at Melbourne Park, Federer has slowly eased back into a full rhythm. "The last couple of days was a bit like that (cautious). It's just around the corner that I can go full-out, hit big serves, and movement will be fully OK. I'm very positive."
Federer opens play at Melbourne Park against a qualifier.
