  • Djokovic draws Ferrer, Raonic in top section

    1/14/12 5:00 PM | Cheryl Murray
Djokovic draws Ferrer, Raonic in top section Novak Djokovic sits atop the first quarter of the Australian Open draw, along with No. 5 seed David Ferrer, Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Canadian Milos Raonic.

Defending Austalian Open champion Novak Djokovic doesn’t face a serious threat in the early rounds. The Serb, ranked No. 1 in the world, is slated to take on Italian Paolo Lorenzi and will then likely play Santiago Giraldo.

Djokovic’s tournament won’t get challenging until the fourth round. Chennai champion Milos Raonic and his monster serve could well prove to be Djokovic’s first real test of the tournament. Raonic proved last year that the courts in Melbourne suit his game, but Djokovic will be the clear favorite to advance to the quarters.

Andy Roddick is also part of this section, but the American hasn’t been in good form of late and he has a tricky opening round encounter with Dutchman Robin Haase.

In the bottom part of the section, David Ferrer lies in wait. The Spaniard just won the Auckland title and appears to be in great shape going into Oz. Ferrer should have a fairly smooth road to the round of 16, where he could face the likes of Janko Tipsarevic or Richard Gasquet.

Barring a massive upset, the top section quarterfinal should feature the two top seeds, Ferrer and Djokovic.
